The Six Swans

A Tale of Magic, Sacrifice, and Family Loyalty

The King's Hunt

A king was once hunting in a large wood. He pursued his game so hotly that none of his courtiers could follow him. But when evening approached, he stopped and looking around him perceived that he had lost himself. He sought a path out of the forest, but could not find one and presently he saw an old woman with a nodding head who came up to him.

"My good woman," said he to her, "Can you not show me the way out of the forest?" "Oh, yes, my lord king," she replied; "I can do that very well. But upon one condition which, if you do not fulfill, you will again get out of the wood, but will die of hunger."

The Wicked Stepmother

As time passed, the king married a beautiful woman, but she had a wicked heart. Fearing that the king’s seven children might suffer from jealousy or mistreatment, he hid them away in a far-off castle deep within the forest.

The queen, driven by envy and greed, discovered the secret of the enchanted ball that led to the hidden castle, and soon set about transforming the king’s children into swans, casting them forever into the forest.

The Maiden's Sacrifice

The youngest daughter of the king, heartbroken by the disappearance of her brothers, ventured deep into the forest to find them. Through perseverance and sacrifice, she worked silently for six long years, weaving shirts made of star-flowers, to break the curse.

Finally, the moment of salvation arrived, and the curse was broken. The six swans returned to human form, but not without their own sacrifices. The youngest brother bore a swan’s wing, a reminder of the trials they endured.

Moral of the Story

God will reward the good and punish the wicked. The power of family, loyalty, and love transcends all trials.
